Preserving Performing Arts: Best Practice (Webinar)

As part of the effort, the team will be holding a special webinar session as a platform to discuss ideas on the preservation of art and culture, the roles of stakeholders and for knowledge and experiences sharing from invited panelists on rebana kercing and other traditional performing arts from Southeast Asian communities.

A team of researchers of Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) is currently carrying out a project to preserve a dying performing art under the project of “Preservation of the Rebana Kercing of Kampung Laut, Kelantan”. This project is funded by the US Ambassadors fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Filming and Photography

Activities

The production team has been filming and recording all project activities. At the end of the project, the video recordings and photographs will be compiled into a video documentary and a coffee table book.

Discussion Session for Training Cluster
A discussion session for Rebana Kercing training cluster was held at Faculty of Creative Technology & Heritage, UMK Bachok on 7 March 2021. This session was conducted to discuss the Rebana Kercing training course for university's subject, training activity, training date, the list of school and student that expected to involve for the RK training, and to draft the activity plan.

Project Progress Meeting

A meeting session of the whole Rebana Kercing preservation project members was conducted on 3 March 2022 . All project clusters presented the project progress and outcomes until February 2022 to the Principal Investigator, Prof Dr Nik Maheran. Prof Nik leads the way of how the project will accomplish very clearly. Prof Farok, as the advisor of the project generously came out with suggestions to make sure the preservation of Rebana Kercing is a success. Dr Ng, the project leader, all the heads of clusters and all the team members has been working so hard towards achieving the goals!

Preservation of The Rebana Kercing Kampung Laut, Kelantan Project Launching Ceremony

On 19th of January 2022, the launching ceremony of Preservation of The Rebana Kercing of Kampung Laut, Kelantan was held. This event took place at Bangunan Belia 48, Kampung Laut, Kelantan. United States Ambassador to Malaysia, Tuan Yang Terutama Brian D. McFeeters this project launching ceremony. There were many other guests present at the event including the people of Kampung Laut where the Rebana Kercing is originated. The launching ceremony was livened up by cultural performance of Rebana Kercing by dance activists.

Cultural performance by Rebana Kercing activists. The performers are wearing unique costumes that represents the Islamic and a mixed of Malay and Arabic elements. The adults act as “pemalu rebana” who play the rhythmic music, while the children act as “penari” or dancers who perform the simple steps and hand movements together with the vocalization of Zikir  form that narrates the history of Islamic religion and teaching.
United States Ambassador to Malaysia, Tuan Yang Terutama Brian D. McFeeters received a Rebana Kercing drum as souvenir from Kumpulan Budaya Rebana Kercing Kampung Laut. The Rebana Kercing drum was made following the traditional drum sample given by Pak Su Harun.

Internal Training Sessions

Activities

Two training sessions were held, one on 29 Dec 2021, and another on 5 Jan 2022, hosted by Dr. Kanit Sripaoraya. The venue for both sessions was Studio Tari, Bachok. The main objective of these internal training sessions was to seek suitable teaching methods. It was difficult to train without proper musical instruments. In addition, to achive synchrony between singing, dancing, and music, it is indispensable to train with patience and determination.
The next training session is expected to be held by February 2022 between Dr. Kanit Sripaoraya and a selected number of students with the Rebana Kercing troupe or En. Hazlami bin Harun.
